The Sky Valley Youth Coalition prevailed in the Lead2Feed Student Leadership Program, a project-based national grant opportunity aimed at community betterment. The Youth Coalition was the only non-school entity to achieve an award, earning a $5,000 charitable grant and a $1,000 technology grant for its successful project, which addressed food insecurity among Sky Valley youth.
A celebration is set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 25 at the Sultan Volunteers of America, 701 First St. The public is invited to attend to hear from teens about the project and to enjoy light refreshments.
The Sky Valley Youth Coalition installed pantries at the middle and high schools in Sultan so kids can take food home. More than half the students in the Sultan School District receive free or reduced-price lunches. The Youth Coalition is part of the Volunteers of America and is organized by the agency’s Ruth Shapovalov. Students were further helped with their project by volunteers Jody Kerr, Lisa Hoesel and Tracy VanHee.
An April Herald story about the project can be read online at tinyurl.com/y7uwess8.
