Team NMHS FBLA Crew, 30 students
Advisor: Dr. Latoya Thomas
Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At New Manchester High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of creativity, compassion, and teamwork. Their project, NMHS FBLA Crew, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.
The Need:
The team recognized a growing issue of food insecurity in their community and wanted to take action by providing essential resources while fostering a culture of care. Their goal was to build three Helping Hands pantry boxes in key community locations, each stocked with 100 non-perishable food and toiletry items. They also aimed to secure ongoing donations to restock the pantries three times within the year.
The Project:
After selecting their initiative, the students connected with local organizations experienced in supporting individuals facing homelessness, such as churches, shelters, and libraries. They researched optimal pantry box designs and sizes, then partnered with a skilled adult to assist in construction. Once built, the students painted and installed the boxes in designated locations. To rally community support, they launched a donation drive, using signs and social media to raise awareness and encourage contributions.
The Results:
The team successfully built and fully stocked two Helping Hands pantry boxes by their deadline and is actively working toward completing a third. To sustain and expand their impact, Lead4Change awarded them a $7,000 grant to fund an extended supply of food and toiletry items, ensuring the pantry boxes remain filled for those in need.
