Assumption High School, 5 Students

Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At Assumption High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, empathy, and service. Their project, 5 Teens for 14, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.
The Need
A group of students set out to raise $1,000 in support of the Lesley & Rhyan Prather Foundation, an organization created to help families during times of tragedy. The cause was deeply personal—a current student had lost her twin sister and mother in a sudden car accident, and the foundation was established in their memory. To raise funds, the students planned a 5K walk.
The Project
To host the walk at a local park, the team needed a $250 permit. They got to work by promoting the event on social media and holding a bake sale during school lunch. Although the weather was rainy on the day of the walk and they expected low turnout, they were heartened by the community’s strong participation despite the conditions.
The Result
The students surpassed their goal, raising $1,500 for the foundation. In recognition of their efforts, and based on their compelling grant proposal, Lead4Change is awarding an $8,640 grant to the Lesley & Rhyan Prather Foundation. The funds will support a girls empowerment summer camp led by female leaders in fire services—honoring the student’s late mother, who was a firefighter. The camp will focus on physical training, CPR certification, safety education, and resources needed to provide a meaningful and empowering experience for participants.
