Team We Care, 15 students
Advisor: Latoya Dill-Johnson
Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At the Boys & Girls Club of East Alabama, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, compassion, and teamwork. Their project, We Care, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.
The Need:
Recognizing the importance of mental health and well-being, this student-led team wanted to make a meaningful impact on children in foster care. They partnered with Big House Foundation of East Alabama, an organization dedicated to supporting foster children and families, to provide comfort and encouragement.
The Project:
The team set a goal to assemble and distribute 25 care bags for foster children. Each bag included a handmade no-sew blanket, a student-designed mindfulness journal and coloring book with Boys & Girls Club affirmations, sensory items, non-perishable food, and other thoughtful essentials. To gather supplies, they leveraged social media to promote their cause and set up donation collection boxes in their community.
The Results:
The students successfully met their goal, delivering 25 care bags to Big House Foundation to benefit local foster children. Inspired by their impact, they applied for a $4,100 grant to create an additional 25 care bags and support future community outreach events. Their efforts not only provided comfort to foster youth but also raised awareness about the importance of mental health and emotional well-being.
