Alliance Academy for Innovation, Georgia
High School, 3 students

Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At Alliance Academy for Innovation, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, creativity, and perseverance. Their project, EmpowerHER, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.
The Need:
A team of young women recognized that limited access to feminine hygiene products during the school day could negatively impact students’ well-being and disrupt their education. To address this, they set a SMART goal to install free-access dispensers with menstrual products in at least six school restrooms by the end of the year.
The Project:
The students began by meeting with key school leaders—including the principal, school nurse, and janitorial staff—to discuss feasibility, logistics, budget, and potential challenges. They then reached out to local businesses, school community groups, and peers to secure funding and product donations.
The Results:
Their efforts led to a $200 donation from the school PTSO, which helped jumpstart the project. To keep costs low, they collaborated with the janitorial team and opted for clear bins secured with Velcro on sink countertops rather than expensive wall-mounted dispensers. They also developed an inventory tracking system to monitor supply and demand. They saw a consistent depletion of products, proving the critical need for this resource.
To sustain and expand their initiative, Lead4Change awarded the team a $2,462 grant, allowing them to stock a full year’s supply of menstrual products and purchase additional bins for all six designated restrooms. Thanks to their leadership and determination, students now have reliable access to these essential supplies, ensuring no one’s education is interrupted due to a lack of feminine hygiene resources.
