Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At Tonganoxie High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. Their project, FCCLA Community Safety, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.

The Need:

This team discovered that, according to the National Safety Council, an estimated 175,300 preventable injury-related deaths occur each year in homes and communities. Motivated by this staggering statistic, they set an ambitious goal: to educate 500 people on practical ways to make their homes and communities safer. They believed that empowering families with knowledge, preparation, and action plans could drive meaningful change in their community.

The Project:

To achieve their goal, the team broke it down into several focused initiatives. They planned and delivered a home and community safety presentation for younger students at a local elementary school, produced an educational video on improving home safety, and created emergency planning folders for families. They also distributed bicycle helmets, donated by a partner organization, Safe Kids, and assembled safety bags specifically for teen drivers. Additionally, the team collaborated with community organizations like Poison Control and Teens in the Driver Seat to gather information, resources, and materials to strengthen their outreach efforts.

The Results:

Through their combined initiatives, the team exceeded their goal, reaching over 1,000 individuals. Their impact included:

  • 647 high school students participating in safe driving education sessions
  • 100 safety bags distributed to teen drivers
  • 267 kindergarten and first-grade students receiving home and community safety training
  • 50 bicycle helmets provided to young students

In recognition of their outstanding work, Lead4Change awarded the team a $7,000 grant. This funding will support the continuation and expansion of their safety efforts, including the creation of weather emergency kits, fire safety resources, and first aid kits—ensuring more students and families are confident, prepared, and equipped to respond in safety situations.
