Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At the G6PD Deficiency Foundation, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. Their project, G64 Education, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.

The Need:

A group of high school students from across the country united virtually around a cause deeply personal to them—raising awareness about G6PD deficiency, a genetic condition that had impacted them or someone they loved. They discovered that this condition is rarely addressed in medical education, and when left undiagnosed, can lead to serious health complications.
Motivated by a call to action from Niloofer Darbary, Vice President of the G6PD Foundation, the students set out to educate the pre-medical and medical student community. Their goal: connect with at least one college medical student organization, like the American Medical Student Association (AMSA), to increase awareness—and raise $6,000 through a double-match fundraising campaign.

The Project:

To achieve their goals, the team implemented a four-phase strategy:

  • Assessment: Created pre- and post-learning surveys to measure impact.
  • Outreach: Contacted AMSA chapters at colleges nationwide.
  • Education: Developed a comprehensive presentation and delivered it at Monmouth University.
  • Awareness & Fundraising: Produced an educational awareness video and launched an online giving campaign.

The Results:

Their efforts led to a 144% increase in G6PD knowledge among attendees, based on survey responses. Their presentation received an impressive 4.6 out of 5 rating for teaching effectiveness. In total, approximately 100 individuals were directly educated through their campaign.

In recognition of their outstanding initiative, Lead4Change awarded a $10,000 grant on behalf of the team. The funds will support an AMSA Alliance Membership, participation in the AMSA Physicians for Change Conference, and continued outreach efforts to expand education about G6PD deficiency.
