KWHS Drive Thru Meals: Students cook up comfort for families during school breaks

Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At King William High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. Their project, KWHS Drive Thru Meals, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.

The Need

Concerned about food insecurity during extended school breaks, the student team set a goal to provide 50 cooked family meals at the start of each of three school breaks—a total of 150 meals. Knowing their school served as a central hub in the community, they planned a “drive-thru” model where families could conveniently pick up a home-cooked meal to take home.

The Project

Building on lessons learned from a previous “drive-thru meals” committee, the team sought donations from local grocery stores and mapped out a menu plan for each break. Meals included hearty main dishes like chili and pasta e fagioli, sides, and a sweet treat. The week before each break, they shopped, prepped, and cooked in bulk using crockpots. Meals were packaged, frozen, and bagged for easy distribution. Families signed up in advance, and on pickup day, pulled into the school, and received their meals curbside—ready to reheat and enjoy at any point during the break.

The Results

Even when not every meal was reserved in advance, the team successfully cooked and distributed all 150 meals—ensuring no food went to waste. In recognition of their thoughtful grant proposal, Lead4Change awarded a $1,500 grant to support the purchase of cooking equipment and materials, allowing them to continue serving their community during future school breaks.
