Assumption High School, 4 Students
Louisville, KY
Advisor: Mary Ann Steutermann
Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At Assumption High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, empathy, and service. Their project, Live to Give, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.
The Need
After learning of a 41% increase in homelessness in their city from 2018 to 2021, a group of students felt compelled to take action. Kentucky ranks among the top ten states for poverty and holds the #5 spot for child poverty—statistics that hit close to home.
Their mission: to assemble and distribute 200 Blessings Bags filled with essential items for individuals experiencing homelessness, in partnership with the local nonprofit His Blessings Box, by the end of February.
The Project
To meet their goal, the students launched a school-wide fundraiser and partnered with a local women’s club to collect both donated items and financial contributions. They bought and assembled “Blessings Bags” that included 6–8 hygiene items.
In addition to distributing the bags at a hot meal event organized by the nonprofit, students and nonprofit members kept extra bags in their cars to hand out directly when they encountered someone in need—extending their impact beyond the planned event.
The Result
The team exceeded their goal, assembling and distributing 230 Blessings Bags to those in need.
Thanks to their outstanding effort, Lead4Change awarded $8,000 to support His Blessings Box. The funds will be used to equip the facility with ovens for hot meal preparation and to purchase nonperishable food items for ongoing monthly outreach events. These mobile events rotate throughout the city, reaching a wide range of communities experiencing food insecurity and homelessness.
