Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At Los Osos High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. Their project, Los Osos FBLA, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.

The Need:

In light of the ongoing wildfires in California and their harmful effects on air quality, this student team chose to focus on lung cancer, a disease that can be aggravated by both environmental factors and personal choices. Their goal was to raise awareness and promote prevention. While volunteering at the Fight for Air Climb—an American Lung Association event where participants “climb” in honor of those impacted by lung cancer—the team connected with individuals whose lives had been deeply affected by the disease. These personal stories added meaning and urgency to their mission.

The Project:

Determined to make an impact, the team launched a multi-faceted awareness campaign. Their initiatives included:

  • A bake sale fundraiser
  • A puzzle painting seminar in partnership with the GO2 Foundation
  • A care package drive collecting over 150 items
  • A lung cancer awareness poster contest
  • A lunch-time health trivia game at their school’s STEAM Fair
  • Workshops presented at their local junior high
  • A New Year’s resolution video highlighting lung health and prevention tips

They also engaged their school and broader community through strategic social media outreach and participation in service events, emphasizing both education and action.

The Results:

The bake sale raised $300 for the American Lung Association, and their New Year’s video reached over 3,000 students. Their message resonated across ages and platforms, combining creativity with meaningful education.

In recognition of their impactful efforts, Lead4Change awarded the team a $9,300 grant to support targeted initiatives in partnership with the American Lung Association, specifically to aid the Fight for Air Climb at the LA Coliseum.
