Prep the Paws: Assumption students took action to fund critical improvements at their local humane society

Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At Assumption High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, teamwork, and creativity. Their project, Prep the Paws, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.

The Need

Driven by their deep love of animals, this student team volunteered countless hours at the local humane society, gaining firsthand insight into its needs. Motivated by their experience, they set a goal to collect two large boxes of high-demand items to support both the staff and the animals at the shelter.

The Project

The students organized donation drives and fundraisers both within their school and on social media. Along the way, they faced several challenges—including weather-related school cancellations due to snow. Despite the setbacks, they showed determination by rescheduling events and keeping their mission on track.

They also had to navigate competing fundraisers at their school. Through collaboration and clear communication with other student groups, they ensured all efforts could move forward successfully.

The Result

The team raised $255 and collected four boxes of donations—doubling their original goal.

Recognizing their impact, Lead4Change awarded $4,348.86 to support the Kentucky Humane Society. The funds will go toward purchasing critical equipment such as washers and dryers, a freezer, walkie talkies, and more—tools that will significantly improve operations and help staff continue providing exceptional care to animals in need.
