Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At the Montwood High School, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. Their project, Rocky’s Closet, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.
The Need:
Motivated by a desire to build student confidence and self-esteem as they entered school each day, the team set out to provide access to gently used clothing for their peers. From that vision, Rocky’s Closet was created—not just as a charitable initiative, but as a student-led effort that encouraged both giving and receiving. The goal was to create a welcoming, accessible thrift-style experience available to any student in need.
The Project:
The team began by collecting donations of gently used clothing and shoes, spreading the word through social media and school signage. They carefully sorted and organized items by category to make the shopping experience smooth and inviting. Their main event was a pop-up clothing swap, where students could browse and select items for free in exchange for bringing a gently used item of their own to swap.
The Results:
With almost no items remaining after the first event, the team had clearly met a real need. Their efforts also attracted the attention of a local thrift store, which became a community partner and helped make a second swap event possible. In recognition of their leadership and impact, Lead4Change awarded the team a $2,000 grant to help sustain Rocky’s Closet and support future events—something the student body is already looking forward to.
