The Pride: Cleveland students with special needs write a book to promote digital safety and literacy

Positive Education Program, Phoenix
High School, 10 students
Cleveland, Ohio

Students across the country are stepping up to solve real challenges in their communities. At the Positive Education Program in Cleveland, a team of students saw a need and took action—demonstrating the power of leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork. Their project, The Pride, is a testament to what’s possible when young leaders take charge.

The Need:

A group of students with special needs came together with a shared goal: to educate themselves and others about online safety. Through open conversations, they shared personal challenges related to being online and saw an opportunity to create something meaningful. At the same time, they discovered that local book banks, like the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank, were in need of diverse children’s books—ones that reflect racial and cultural diversity and engage young readers. The students believed that greater access to books could encourage kids to spend less time online and more time reading.

The Project:

With support from their teacher, the students wrote and illustrated their own children’s book focused on online safety tips. They collaborated on every aspect—from choosing the title and message to creating colorful, engaging illustrations. Copies were printed and distributed to local grade school classrooms to help educate younger students. They also launched a book drive, setting a goal of collecting 30 diverse books to donate to the Cleveland Kids’ Book Boxes, community-based free sharing libraries. An email was sent school-wide with permission to invite book donations from students and families.

The Results:

Over the course of four months, these students not only learned valuable lessons about protecting themselves online, but also shared those lessons in a creative and impactful way. They surpassed their book donation goal and formulated a grant request. Lead4Change fulfilled their request for a $4,500 grant, which will be used to purchase specific titles from the Cleveland Kids’ Book Bank Amazon Wish List, further expanding access to diverse books for local children.
